How To Add Small Art to Frames

Ever have a smaller work of art you want to display, but aren’t quite sure it can be done? Have no fear — adding small pieces of art to frames is easier than you think!

My new favorite thing lately has been painting mini abstract works, and in the packaging for my orders I like to include these “little reminder” cards which each have an original paintings on the back.

Creating them is not only a a fun expression for me, but it’s also an extra bonus for my lovely customers to get a tiny JSH original.

But then what do you do with it?

Well, you could always just keep the card in your purse/wallet/pocket, or maybe use it as a bookmark.

But if you really love it (or maybe have collected a few!), why not hang them up on the wall?

To frame these little cuties, all you need is:

• small pieces of art
• custom matting & frames
• framer’s tape

I get my frames from Frame It Easy (yes, I work with them, and yes, love them.)

For these particular frames, I ordered the following:

• 6 Shiny Gold frames (Style 93) with an Art Size of 8″x10″ (Get the Non-Glare Acrylic – it will change your life.)
• 6 Smooth White (White Core) Mats with Outside Dimensions of 8″x10″ and Inside Dimensions of 1 1/2″ x 3″ from the Accessories page. (The cards are 2″x3 1/2″ so I reduced the measurements by 1/2″ so the matboard would overlap enough to “grab” the cards and hold them in place. I don’t want them falling through the matboard opening!)
• Framer’s Tape

Then I cut small pieces of Framer’s Tape and taped my art cards to the inside of the mat boards, positioning them in the center of the mat opening.

After that, I simply added them into the frames, and voila!

I added them to my “book nook” (with Command Strips, because #plasterwalls), and I just can’t stop staring at them.

There’s something so eye-catching about adding thicker matting to a small piece of art — you might think that because the art is small it would get lost, but the stark matting actually accentuates each piece and makes it even more impactful and captivating.
