hopescapes
by Jessica Serra Huizenga
Joy is not the absence of darkness; it’s the decision to illuminate it.
This series is a meditation on the complexity of life — the darkness we carry, the messiness we endure, and the moments of joy that break through. Bold, abstract black forms serve as shadows of experience, while bursts of vibrant confetti color erupts across the surface, celebrating resilience, hope, and the small, rebellious acts of joy that persist even in the darkest times. These works embrace life’s ‘and-ness’: sorrow and celebration, chaos and beauty, despair and hope. Each piece is an invitation to witness that joy can emerge, messy and imperfect, and that even amidst darkness, color (and life) prevails.

Each piece in the hopescapes collection starts with bold, expressive strokes of acrylic paint & crayon, then colorful confetti is layered on top, each piece applied individually. Some also include other elements like glitter or disco tiles. Every work is completely handmade and unique.
